Egypt’s immigration minister confirms an Egyptian death after fight in Riyadh

An Egyptian citizen was killed after being run over following a fight with Saudi nationals in Riyadh, Egypt’s immigration and expatriate affairs minister Nabila Makram said on Tuesday.

Makram said in a press statement that Saudi officials confirmed that four of those involved in the killing of Egyptian national Walid Hamdy El-Sayed were arrested, adding that an initial report by the Saudi officials said that the cause of death was ‘intentional running over.’

She added that she has sent a representative from the General Union of Egyptians Abroad to Saudi Arabia in order to regularly update the ministry.

The Egyptian minister added that an autopsy is currently being carried out to ensure that those involved are punished according to conclusions from ongoing investigations by the Saudi authorities.

The reasons behind the brawl remain unclear.

A video showing El-Sayed’s corpse on the ground went viral on social media.

In November 2015 an Egyptian citizen was killed following a fight between a group of Egyptians and Kuwaitis when one of the Kuwaitis ran him over multiple times with his car.

Kuwaiti police said in November that they arrested fourteen people over the incident, including the perpetrator who ran him over and was charged with murder. The status and outcome of his trial is unknown.
