Egypt’s Internet Firms Deny Cutting Services from Pro-Morsi Camps

Telecom and internet Firms have denied cutting the service in Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque and El Nahda square in conjunction with raiding the sit-ins of pro-Morsi .

 An official source in internet Firms said the Firms did not cut the service in the two camps, pointing out that some news which circulated regarding cutting the service are invalid.

 The Firms added to Amwal Al Ghad in case of requesting to cut the service, the Firms won’t be committed for the requests as the first losers will be the residents surrounding the area.

 An official source in the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has stated that The Telecom Act (Law 10/2003) stated that competent authorities shall have the power to subject to their administration all Telecommunication Services and networks of any Operator or Service Provider and call operation and maintenance employees of such services and networks in case of natural or environmental disasters or during declared periods of general mobilization in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 87 of 1960 or any other cases concerning National  Security.

The source added that Eng. Atef Helmy, the Egyptian Minister of Information and Communication Technology (MCIT) does not have the right to prevent security authorities in case of threatening the national security, stressing that the Ministry is not within the governing bodies to cut the telecommunications in Egypt.
