Egypt’s Police Disperse Small Brotherhood Protest In Matariya

Egyptian police dispersed on Friday around 100 pro-Muslim Brotherhood protesters int the eastern Cairo district of Matariya, a site of regular anti-government protests.

Police fired teargas at the protesters soon after they took to the streets following Friday prayers, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported.

Weekly demonstrations by Brotherhood supporters, which were common after Mohamed Morsi’s ouster last year, have dwindled in numbers this year amid a government crackdown that has seen hundreds of protesters killed in clashes with police and thousands of others jailed.

An attempt by a pro-Morsi group, the Salafist Front, to mobilise anti-government and pro-Islamist protesters two weeks ago failed to draw large numbers.

The Brotherhood was declared a terrorist organisation by the Egyptian government in December 2013.
