Egypt’s smartphone maker SICO to start exports to Germany in Nov.

SICO, Egypt’s first smart phone manufacturer, will begin exporting its devices to Germany next month as part of an expansion plan to enter European and African countries, the company’s chairman said on Tuesday.

Mohamed Salem told Reuters that Silicon Industries Corporation (SICO), which already exports to the Arabian Gulf, signed a deal in October with a firm in Europe to market its products.

“We will begin exporting from Upper Egypt to Germany, Holland, and Austria, and then to Sweden, Norway and Finland,” Salem said.

SICO’s plant in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Assiut has a production capacity of 2 million devices a year.

The company is also planning to sell its products, whose brand name is Nile X, in the broader African market.

“We signed agreements with three Chinese companies to manufacture phones for them for export to Africa and to offer on the Egyptian market,” Salem said.

“We started manufacturing them a month ago and the first of these products will be distributed inside the Egyptian market next week.”

SICO, which was launched late 2017, is predominantly owned by private investors, with a 20 percent stake held by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

The company exports 25 percent of its capacity, according to Salem, and aims to raise the figure to 50 percent by the end of next year.
