El-Sisi Challenging To Retain Time Magazine’s Reader Poll

Former army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi is once again competing in Time magazine’s Person of the Year reader poll.

He leads Barack Obama, Vladimir Putin and Abdullah Gul, but is facing stiff competition from Laverne Cox, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga.

El-Sisi won the 2013 reader poll, while the Person of the Year, chosen by the editor, was won by Pope Francis.

In the world leaders category, the former minister of defence leads with more than 30,000 votes. Among his rivals are Pope Francis, Turkish President Gul, Turkish PM Erdogan, the head of the Qatari Museum Authority Sheikha Mayasa, Indian politician Arvind Kejriwal and Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.

According to live results shown on the magazine’s website, El-Sisi is in top overall position but he is still facing competition from LGBT activist Laverne Cox, Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber, Indian politician Arvind Kejrlwal, American pop singer Katy Perry, Nigerian Academy award winner Lupita Nyong’o and American pop singer Beyonce Knowles.

The voting process will close on 22 April. The winner of the reader poll will be announced 23 April, while the official Time 100 list will be announced on 24 April.
