EU chief praises COP 28 climate deal

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday that the deal reached at the COP28 climate summit could speed up the shift towards a more sustainable and healthier economy and ensure the world remains aligned with the climate objectives of the Paris Agreement.

“It is good news for the whole world that we now have a multilateral agreement to accelerate emission reductions towards net zero by 2050, with urgent action in this critical decade,” stated von der Leyen.

“The world has committed to tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling the rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030. This gives powerful momentum to the transition away from fossil fuels,” she added.

Von der Leyen also expressed her gratitude to Climate Action Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra and all the Commission and Member State negotiators for their hard work over the past few weeks.

She highlighted that COP28 exemplifies European collaboration, coordination, and leadership. Furthermore, it powerfully illustrates the importance of multilateralism in addressing the most significant challenges our planet faces.
