Experts: Electronic Boycotts are Pointless

In light of the boycott launched against Google for broadcasting the anti-Muslim movie on Youtube, and that of mobile operators due to their decision to impose a-one-penny tax on balance checking services, experts argue that boycotts are no longer the cure to the current circumstances.

Sayed Ismail, Board Chairman of S.I Technologies, stated that the boycott will harm the interest of all Egyptians given that most of the employees at foreign companies that have business in Egypt are Egyptians, and whereupon, the boycott will negatively affect them.

He pointed out that condemning the profane movie by boycotting Google will not resolve the problem, suggesting using the same tools of technology to express disapproval of the videos posted on the internet.

Likewise, Hatem Zahran, an expert in technology, agreed that boycotts do not guarantee the desired outcome, explaining that most of the boycotts organized by Egyptians are always doomed to failure due to lack of methodology for implementation. He also highlighted that the repercussions of boycotts are not immediately manifested but they become tangible only in the quarterly results of companies.
