GCC to Reiterate Support for ‘Egyptian People’s Choice’

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is to reiterate its full and determined support for Egypt’s interim authorities.

In its draft final communiqué, the GCC summit in Kuwait “will repeat its endorsement of the Egyptian people’s choice,” a Gulf source told Ahram Online.

GCC leaders are very keen to reflect the feelings of their peoples who wish to help Egypt move beyond its current crisis, the source added.

The Kuwait summit, which concludes on Wednesday, is the first meeting of GCC leaders since the overthrow of the Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July.

Supporters of Morsi, who is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, consider his removal a military coup. They strongly criticise Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain for their financial and political support for Egypt’s interim authorities.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait have pledged about $12 billion in aid and loans to Egypt since Morsi’s ouster.

Qatar adopts a different approach as it believes elections, not a military intervention, should have decided Morsi’s fate.

Ahram Online understands the draft communiqué of the Kuwait summit will confirm the GCC’s support for Egypt and highlight the importance of maintaining its security and stability.
