Authorities at Cairo International Airport on Friday prevented head of the Islamist Labor Party Magdi Hussein from leaving Egypt on a flight to Turkey, Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website reported.
Hussein, a staunch supporter of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, is also a leading figure in the Muslim Brotherhood-led National Alliance to Support Legitimacy (NASL).
The Islamist figure was also an outspoken critic of autocratic president Hosni Mubarak, under whom he served a two-year prison sentence for entering Gaza illegally through a cross-border tunnel.
Security forces have cracked down on the Brotherhood and their Islamist allies since Morsi’s ouster. Thousands have been imprisoned and hundreds killed in clashes with security forces.
