Israeli PM Lapid won’t attend COP27 in Egypt after losing elections

Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid will not attend the UN climate summit COP27 in Egypt next week, his office said in a statement on Wednesday.

The cancelation came after Lapid lost in the vote counting in the 25th Knesset elections for his predecessor Benjamin Netanyahu. After the election results became public, Lapid canceled his trip to the climate summit, according to the Israeli radio channel Kan.

Egypt is hosting this year’s climate summit in the Red Sea resort of Sharm El-Sheikh on November 6-18.

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog will head the Israeli delegation to the summit, Lapid’s office said.

According to the semi-final results, the Likud party alone won 31 seats, and in total Netanyahu’s bloc won 65 seats, while the outgoing Prime Minister Lapid’s bloc got 50 seats in the Knesset.
