Leave politics out of Syria’s besieged camp: Egyptian foreign minister

Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nabil Fahmy, issued a statement on Saturday calling on political rivals in Syria to put their political disputes aside and end the siege of tens of thousands Palestinians and Syrians trapped inside the Yarmouk camp.

He further called on “all elements concerned” to facilitate the entrance of humanitarian and relief aid to the besieged camp.

Yarmouk is largely in the hands of rebel forces, and has been under army siege since June, making it nearly impossible for food and medicines to enter or for residents to leave.

At least 86 people have died since the siege was enforced, according to monitoring groups.

However, on 30 January a food convoy gained entry to the camp for the first time in months.

The camp, located on the outskirts of Damascus, has been home to 148,500 Palestinian refugees since its establishment in 1957.
