LNG-powered CMA CGM container ship transits Suez Canal on maiden voyage

The CMA CGM NOTRE DAME, one of the world’s largest LNG-powered container ships, transited Egypt’s Suez Canal on Tuesday on its first voyage through the waterway, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said.

The vessel, operated by French shipping group CMA CGM, is deployed on the Far East–North Europe trade route and has a capacity of more than 24,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), according to the authority.

SCA Chairman Ossama Rabiee said the authority provided navigational support to facilitate the vessel’s transit through the canal.

The ship is among a new generation of LNG-powered container vessels introduced by CMA CGM as the shipping industry seeks to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency.
