Marilyn Monroe’s painting auctioned for $195 million

A portrait of Marilyn Monroe, painted by Andy Warhol in the 1960s, has been auctioned on Monday for $195 million, a record for a work by an American artist being sold at auction.

‎The painting ,Shot Sage Blue Marilyn, was sold at auction by Christie’s in New York on Monday , and the estimated value of the painting before the sale was about 200 million dollars.

Thomas and Doris Amann Foundation owned the painting in Zurich.  All earnings from this sale will go to a foundation specialized in improving the lives of children around the world.

‎Warhol based the painting on a promotional photo of Monroe from movie “Niagara” in 1953.
