Microsoft Corp. is purchasing 100 per cent of the energy exported from EDP Renewables’ SolarNova 8 project in Singapore, in a bid to advance its climate objectives.
The deal involves a 20-year offtake agreement where Microsoft will acquire all renewable energy produced by the project, which has a capacity of up to 200 megawatts.
The SolarNova 8 project, part of the government-backed SolarNova programme, is the largest phase of the initiative and is expected to generate approximately 420 gigawatt-hours annually, equating to about 5 per cent of Singapore’s total energy consumption.
Microsoft’s move comes as the company faces challenges in meeting its goal of becoming carbon-negative by 2030. The tech giant reported a 30 per cent increase in emissions last year due to rising investments in artificial intelligence.
This is the second agreement between the two companies in Singapore, strengthening a clean energy partnership that began in 2018.
