Ministerial Committee to follow up COMESA Customs Union’s Programmes

Minister of Trade and Industry Monir Fakhry Abd El Nour issued a decree Saturday to form ministerial committee to follow up applying the programmes and mechanisms of COMESA Customs Union.

The committee, set to be headed by the minister, will include representatives of ministries of finance, foreign affairs, international cooperation, agriculture, justice, communications, transport, electricity, water resources, environment affairs and civil aviation.

The Member States of Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) have agreed to a gradual establishment of a Common External Tariff in respect of all goods imported into the Member States from third countries within a period of ten years from the entry into force of the Treaty and in accordance with a schedule to be adopted by the Council.

The committee also to encompass representatives of Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS),  The National Council for Women (NCW), General Authority for Investment (GAFI), Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce (FEDCOC), Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA), Egyptian Financial Supervisory Authority(EFSA), and Egyptian Businessmen’s Association (EBA).

Abd El Nour added that the committee will make reports about Egypt’s situation in applying COMESA’s programmes as well as holding workshops with COMESA’s secretary to spread the awareness of the agreement and its programmes and how to make use of COMESA’s organizations.
