Morsi’s Supporters Celebrate Eid in Sit-ins

Supporters of ousted President Mohamed Morsi celebrated on Thursday the first day of Eid (Islamic holidays) in their sit-ins which they have held for more than a month to demand the reinstatement of their elected leader.

Former Minister of Religious Endowments Talaat Afifi led the Eid prayers at the Rabaa al-Adaweya protest where Morsi’s wife and daughter told his supporters that the president sends his regards, even though they have not seen or spoken to him.

“I send to you the president’s greetings. I haven’t seen or heard from him, but I know very well what he holds in his heart for you and the love he has for you. He will return God willing,” the wife of the toppled president said.

She chanted, “He will return! He will return!” with the protesters.

The Rabaa protesters are awaiting five marches who were announced on Wednesday by the National Coalition to Support Legitimacy which groups Islamist parties including the Muslim Brotherhood.

Another group of Morsi’s supporters performed Eid prayers in Nahda Square where they distributed sweets and toys to the children and hung a large image of the ousted president as they, too, awaited marches.

The Brotherhood’s Morsi was ousted by the army in response to mass demonstrations last month, a year after he was elected to office.
