Netherlands halts air, train traffic due to storm

The Netherlands stopped all air and rail traffic due to strong storms on Wednesday, and authorities urged people to stay indoors.

Storm Poly hit the Dutch coast early Wednesday with wind gusts of up to 120 kilometres per hour. The national meteorology institute issued a code-red storm warning, the highest level of alert.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport cancelled more than 300 flights, according to a spokesperson. Train operator NS stopped all train traffic in the northern Netherlands, and a highway north of Amsterdam was closed due to falling trees.
