Nigeria food bank faces dwindling supplies as inflation skyrockets

The Lagos Food Bank, vital for residents, faces dwindling supplies as inflation skyrockets in Nigeria while President Bola Tinubu’s unpopular economic reforms worsened the cost of living crisis, as per a Reuters report.

Many residents struggle with hunger, relying on the food bank for sustenance. Tragically, a recent stampede at a distribution centre claimed seven lives.

World Bank data reveals 46 per cent of Nigerians live in poverty, with 20 million in urban areas while The Food Bank, once brimming with staples, now struggles with 93 per cent supply cuts due to high food costs.

Founder Michael Sunbola says they’ve reduced quantities, now serving only women over 50, compared to broader assistance before. Similarly, No Hunger Initiatives in Abuja faces supply cuts amid tripled demand since May 2023, exacerbating the hunger crisis.
