Number of Egyptians worldwide to reach 100 million today

Egypt’s population will reach 92 million on Thursday, rising by one million over the last six months and making the total number of Egyptians worldwide 100 million, the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS) announced in a statement on Wednesday.

From 2006 to 2016, Egypt’s population rose by 17.3 million, according to CAPMAS.

“The ongoing population growth rates significantly limit the efforts to achieve tangible progress in living standards,” the statement read.

Prime Minister Sherif Ismail warned in July of the current rate of population increase, saying it hinders the country’s development plans.

In 2015, CAPMAS said that the current population growth rate of 2.4 percent represents one of the most important and dangerous challenges that Egyptian society faces, adding that the rate was five times that of developed countries and double the average for developing countries.
