One Injured In Attack On Checkpoint In Egypt’s Sinai, Military Operations Continue

Unknown assailants fired at a military checkpoint in North Sinai’s Rafah on Tuesday, injuring an army conscript.

Mohamed Hussein, 22, was shot in the foot, a security source told Reuters’ Aswat Masriya website.

Meanwhile, the army continues its “anti-terrorist” operations in the Rafah and Sheikh Zuwayed areas of North Sinai.

Eyewitnesses told Aswat Masriya that soldiers raided several buildings suspected of housing Islamist militants involved in recent attacks on security forces.

Apache helicopters have been hovering over the area since the morning, an eyewitness added.

On Sunday, military spokesman Ahmed Ali said the army would continue its operations in the restive peninsula until it was “terrorist-free.”

“Starting from 7 August we launched a military operation to destroy terrorist and criminal groups in Sinai, implement security and stability, and enforce the law,” he said at a press conference.

Dozens of state troops have died in attacks and clashes with militants since the ouster of Mohamed Morsi on 3 July. The army has reported killing tens of militants and arresting at least 300 others.
