One ‘Terrorist’ Killed, Army Personnel Injured In Egypt’s Al-Wahat Police Chase

One “terrorist element” was killed and a military personnel injured Sunday in an army car chase involving two suspected vehicles in the Western desert’s Al-Wahat area.

One of the two vehicles was captured by border guards during the pursuit, an army spokesman said in a statement.

The injured member of the armed forces has been transported to the hospital and is in a stable condition.

The car contained a number of firearms as well as anti-army propaganda, the statement read.

The army is currently combing the area for the second vehicle.

In July 2014, 21 border guards were killed by gunmen in Al-Farafra, also in the western desert near Egypt’s border with Libya.

Egypt is battling a decade-long Islamist insurgency that has spiked in the last year and a half following the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi. The insurgency is based in Sinai, near Egypt’s border with the Gaza strip.

However, terrorist attacks have stretched to Cairo and its surrounding governorates over the past two years. Although army and police personnel are the targets of these attacks, civilians have been also affected.
