Policeman killed in explosion on 15 May Bridge near Zamalek exit

One policeman has been killed and two civilians injured in an explosion on the Zamalek exit of the 15 May Bridge in Cairo, a health ministry spokesman has told Ahram Online.

The bridge witnesses heavy traffic in the morning as students and workers head to downtown Cairo and its surrounding neighbourhood.

Egypt has been hit by a wave of terrorist attacks and bombs, mostly targeting security forces, ever since the ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.

Recently, explosions have targeted civilian areas and economic installations, such as electricity pylons and mobile phone stores.

The attacks in Cairo and its surrounding governorates have been mostly caused by small improvised explosive devices.

Attacks have been more severe in North Sinai governorate, where Egypt’s army is combating a decade-long militant Islamist insurgency that has spiked in the last year and a half.

Hundreds of security personnel have been killed in North Sinai, while the army and police have killed hundreds of ‘militants’ too.
