Private car sales in Egypt mount to $1.3bn in first 5 months of 2016

The private cars market sold 58,600 units in the first five months of this year, amounting to sales of 12.2 billion Egyptian Pounds (US$1.3 billion).

Korean brands maintained their place at the top of private car sales, registering 19,500 cars sold worth 3.4 billion pounds, between January and May 2016, a decline of 14.3% compared to the same period last year.

Japanese brands sold 16,900 cars in the same period, registering sales of  3.9 billion pounds, , a decline of 27.5% from last year.

As for the European market, its sales ranked third with 10,400 units sold worth 2.8 billion pounds, a decline of 31.8% compared to the same period last year. In fourth place came American brands with 7,300 units sold over five months worth 1.4 billion pounds, a decline of 24.6%.

Chinese brands came in fifth place with 4,200 sold units worth 510 million pounds, a decline of 41.9%. Other Asian brands came in last place with 158 sold cars worth 25.2 million pounds by the Malaysian brand Proton, a decline of 62.2%.

In the first four months of this year, 44,900 units of private cars were sold, with sales worth 9.1 billion pounds,.

From January to April, Korean brands also maintained their top rank in the private cars market with 14,500 cars sold worth 2.46 billion pounds. This is a decline of 24.7% compared to the same period last year.

As for Japanese brands, 13,300 units worth 2.9 billion pounds were sold over the same period, a decline of 30.4% from the same period last year.

European brands came third with 7,190 units sold worth  2.2 billion pounds, registering a decline of 34.2% compared to the same period last year. American brands ranked fourth with 5,369 sold units worth 1.1 billion pounds over four months, a decline of 36.4%.

Chinese brands came in fifth place with 3,247 units sold worth 376 million pounds, a decline of 42%. The Asian market came last with just 158 units sold worth  25.2 million pounds by the Malaysian brand Proton, a 54.7% decline in sales.
