The plans of Egyptian Electricity Ministry targets new and renewable energy projects to participate in state’s generating power system by 20 percent in 2022.

Chairman of the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) Mohamed Salah El Sobky stated Tuesday that the demand on power is expected to decline by 8 percent by 2020 since the ministry targets lowering industrial and home consumption by 20 percent within the coming period.

The minister made these remarks during a conference held by the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) today about sustainable energy in Egypt.

He said that Egyptian power sector is facing a lot of problems notably providing subsidiary for renewable energy which represents a challenge for state’s budget. Accordingly, the expansions in investment plans have been affected negatively resulting the power crisis within the last three years.

El Sobky pointed out that the drop in maintenance processes as well as the decline in gas and oil supplies for power generating stations were the key factors that led the crisis to erupt within the last years.

The power crisis has started to be  solved after the government made a lot of decisions about issuing renewable energy projects and diversifying power sources, the chairman added.
