Saudi cabinet approves Red Sea island agreement

The Saudi Cabinet approved Monday a Saudi-Egyptian maritime border demarcation agreement during a session headed King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.

Last week,  the country’s Shura council approved the deal.

Based on the agreement, which was signed by representatives from both countries on 8 April during the Saudi king’s five-day visit to Cairo, Egypt recognised Saudi sovereignty over the two Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir.

The deal, which has been met by criticism and has sparked several protests throughout Egypt, has not yet been presented to the Egyptian parliament for a vote.
