Saudi electricity minister arrives in Cairo to discuss cooperation

Saudi Arabia’s water and electricity minister, Abdullah Ben Abdelrahman Al-Hussein, arrived in Cairo on Sunday night to meet with officials over possible cooperation between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, state news agency MENA reported.

The minister will meet with officials to discuss potential projects in the electricity sector.

The Egyptian cabinet approved in January funding for a $1.6 billion project to link the electricity grids of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, where they would share 3,000 megawatts of electricity by 2017.

Egypt is trying to boost its electricity sector and establish new power plants.

During Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi’s visit to Germany, Egypt signed on 3 June an eight billion euro deal with industrial group Siemens for gas supply and wind power plants, which would boost Egypt’s power generation by 50 percent.
