Sisi, AngloGold Ashanti CEO discuss expanding mining partnership on Egypt Mining Forum sidelines

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met AngloGold Ashanti CEO Alberto Calderon on Monday to discuss expanding the company’s partnership with Egypt beyond its operation of the Sukari gold mine, the Egyptian presidency said.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the opening of the Egypt Mining Forum 2026, in the presence of Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi.

Sisi stressed the state’s commitment to supporting AngloGold Ashanti’s investments in Egypt and providing a suitable environment for the company to expand its operations, the presidency said.

The president expressed Egypt’s interest in broadening cooperation with AngloGold Ashanti in exploration, technology, and expertise transfer, training Egyptian personnel, developing local supply chains, and attracting further investment.

The meeting reviewed the company’s current operations and expansion plans in Egypt, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation in the mining sector.

Calderon praised the Egyptian government’s support for the company and efforts to address challenges facing its operations, saying Egypt was one of AngloGold Ashanti’s priority investment destinations.

The company plans to make further investments in promising mining sites in Egypt and support the discovery and development of new projects similar to Sukari, Calderon said.

The two sides also discussed expanding AngloGold Ashanti’s exploration activities in Egypt, particularly in gold, the presidency said.

Sisi reaffirmed the state’s readiness to provide the facilities needed to support the company’s activities as part of Egypt’s efforts to expand its mining sector and attract foreign investment.
