Sisi extends Suez Canal chief’s tenure by one year

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has extended the tenure of Osama Rabie as chairman and managing director of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) for another year, effective Wednesday, the presidency said.

Rabie, who has led the authority since 2019, will remain in the post through 11 August 2027, according to a presidential decree.

Sisi also appointed Ahmed Khaled Hassan Hussein as deputy chairman of the Suez Canal Authority for a one-year term beginning Wednesday, the presidential spokesperson said in a statement.

The Suez Canal is a major source of foreign currency for Egypt and a key shipping route linking the Mediterranean and Red seas, providing a major passage between Asia and Europe.
