Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi made a surprise visit to Cairo’s police academy Thursday morning, amid increasing reports of police brutality and torture.
During the visit, the reason for which has not been provided, the president ate breakfast with the academy’s students and inspected their morning physical exercises, state news agency MENA reported.
Last week, prosecution ordered the detainment of a policeman in Ismailiya governorate for four days pending investigations into torturing to death veterinarian Afify Houssni.
While hundreds protested in Luxor governorate over the death of a 47-year-old man whose family says was tortured to death in a local police station. At least four policemen, accused of torture in this case, were transferred from Luxor to different governorates until investigations were over.
Egypt’s interior ministry released a statement on Sunday saying the investigations are underway in all cases and they will not have any leniency with “isolated incidents” from members of the police force.
