Sisi to launch 1.5 Million Feddans project end-December

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is to launch the 1.5 Million Feddans project at the end of December 2015, the Cabinet announced in a statement released Monday.

The project targets boosting the current agricultural land base, estimated at 8 million feddans,  by 20 percent to reach 9.5 million.

The mega project covers different governorates: Qena, Minya, New Valley, Marsa Matruh, South Sinai, Giza, and Ismailia.

The project is divided upon three phases: the first phase includes developing and reclaiming 500,000 feddans, the second encompasses reclaiming 490,000 feddans while the third targets reclaiming 610,000 feddans, irrigation minister Hossam el-Moghazy told Reuters.

It is planned to dig around 13.225 water wells among project’s framework.

Egypt is executing a number of large projects to boost its economy notably National Roads project, new power plants, natural gas discoveries, and expanding the agricultural land base.
