South Africa to host BRICS virtual summit on situation in Gaza

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will host an extraordinary joint meeting of BRICS group on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Gaza six weeks into the war of Israeli aggression.

Ramaphosa will chair the virtual meeting, which will also be attended by the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India and China, according to the South African presidency announced stated on Monday.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will also participate in this meeting, after which the leaders “are expected to adopt a joint declaration on the situation in the Middle East, in particular in Gaza.”

South Africa has long been a vocal supporter of the Palestinian cause, with the ruling (African National Congress) ANC party often linking it to its own struggle against apartheid.
