Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s strong opposition to the forced displacement of Palestinians and expressed full support for Egypt’s Gaza reconstruction plan during a high-level meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in Madrid on Wednesday.
The two leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional developments, with Sánchez emphasizing Spain’s commitment to backing the outcomes of the upcoming Arab summit in Egypt and stressing the urgent need to implement a two-state solution.
President Sisi underscored the importance of international support for Gaza’s reconstruction, emphasizing that Palestinians must not be displaced from their homeland.
“Today, we reaffirmed the importance of international backing for a comprehensive Gaza reconstruction plan—without the forced displacement of Palestinians. And I repeat, without the displacement of Palestinians from their land, which they steadfastly hold onto, and their homeland, which they will not relinquish. This ensures the immediate launch of relief efforts and early recovery operations,” President Sisi stated.
He also stressed the vital role of international organisations, particularly UNRWA, in delivering essential humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.
Syria, Lebanon, and Regional Security
Discussions extended beyond Palestine to include Syria, with both leaders reaffirming support for its sovereignty and territorial integrity. They called for a comprehensive political process and condemned Israeli violations, demanding an end to Israel’s occupation of the Golan Heights.
Regarding Lebanon, President Sisi and Sánchez welcomed the election of a new president and prime minister, emphasising the need to maintain the ceasefire and ensure Israel’s full withdrawal from Lebanese territory.
The meeting also covered regional security concerns, with both sides agreeing to enhance cooperation in securing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and preventing attacks on commercial shipping, reinforcing their commitment to maritime stability in the region.
