Suez Canal Authority signs lake rehabilitation deal with Future of Egypt Authority

The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) and the Future of Egypt Authority for Sustainable Development signed a cooperation protocol on Thursday to develop and rehabilitate Egyptian lakes as part of state efforts to improve their economic and environmental value.

Under the agreement, the SCA will conduct dredging and cleaning works in designated lakes according to technical specifications, depths, and coordinates set by the Future of Egypt Authority, according to a statement.

SCA Chairman Osama Rabie said the authority would support national development projects through its engineering expertise and dredging capabilities, describing the authority as a key partner in lake rehabilitation efforts.

Rabie referred to previous dredging and rehabilitation works in Lake Bardawil, Lake Manzala, Lake Edku, and Lake Mariout aimed at restoring ecological balance and supporting fisheries development.

He added that the SCA is also pursuing a broader strategy to diversify revenue sources through maritime industrial localisation, logistics services, and expanded economic activities.

Future of Egypt Authority Executive Director Bahaa El Ghanam said the agreement aims to rehabilitate Egyptian lakes, improve natural resource management, and increase productivity to support food security, fisheries, and surrounding communities.

He added that cooperation with the SCA would help improve the efficiency of dredging operations in line with environmental standards and scientific studies covering hydrological and environmental conditions.
