Telecom Egypt Protesters to Present Their Demands to CEO Tomorrrow

A number of employees at Telecom Egypt who have launched a sit-in in front of the cabinet will attend a meeting with Eng. Mohamed Nawawy, the company’s CEO, to discuss their demands highlighted today during the sit-in.

Eng. Mohamed Ziada, spokesman of the coalition of Telecom Egypt employees, stated that the company’s administration will respond tomorrow to the pressure of the protesters, pointing out that the company has started to consider the employees as a force that cannot be underestimated, especially due to the increasing number of sit-ins.

He told Amwal Al Ghad that Eng. Khaled Desouki, Deputy Director og the technical service sector, has met a number of representatives of the employees by the end of last week and discussed their demands. Desouki emphasized that he will consider the employees’ demands concerning restructuring managerial positions, reforming the promotion system, and choosing employees for certain positions.

In today’s protest, the employees asked for dismissing the board of directors, restructuring the salaries, and expanding the health insurance to cover both the employees and their families, in addition to forming a judicial commission to look into the files of corruption in the company.

Eng. Mohamed Abu Quraish, Chairman of the Independent Association of Telecom Egypt, emphasized that the company has received a number of complaints from different categories and groups of the employees listed in the second phase, adding that such complaints have been signed from all employees concerned.  Moreover, a number of employees have requested collective transfer from administrative units of low-financial returns to units offering high-financial returns.

The ordinary general assembly of Telecom Egypt, has approved the cost required for restructuring the salaries, which amounted to EGP 243 million annually. This cost will be added to the total salaries, including what has been approved in the first phase, in addition to the other new costs related to meeting the demands of the workers and the amendments carried out based on the performance of the employees and the newly hired employees.
