Ministry of Housing to upgrade 10 ‘unsafe’ slums in Egypt

Ministry of Housing has decided to start developing ten unsafe slums in five governorates across Egypt.

This comes after the Ministry of State for the Development of Civilization and Slums, now incorporate with the ministry of housing, had agreed with the five governorates to upgrade those slums and to pay half of the development costs.

According to Mohamed Nasser, Head of the Central Agency of Reconstruction, the five governorates where the development works would commence are; Cairo, Qalyubia, Sohag, Luxor, and Aswan.

Carrying out the slums’ development scheme is top priority, Nasser said, referring that there are agreements already signed between the Slums Development Fund and the governorates.

The top official further said the slums under development locate in Cairo’s Manshiyat Naser and 15th May, Sohag’s El Samakeen area, Luxor’s Al-Hamam, Abu Murad, Al-Haggag and Al-Maabad areas, in addition to Aswan’s Al-Sahaby area, Bahtim’s accommodation tents, and Qalyubia’s Dar El-Deyafa (guesthouse) area.

Nasr further said his agency is setting a timeframe to complete the slums development schemes within three years as pursuant to the Minister of Housing Moustafa Madbouly’s recommendations.
