Elon Musk announced in a tweet on Friday that Twitter will shift its focus from its Circles feature, to improving Communities and group DM features, as it will be deprecating Circles.
Twitter Circles was introduced last August, enabling users to post tweets only visible to selected followers, a feature similar to Instagram’s Close Friends feature.
Musk did not provide any more information on what the feature’s fate would be; the social media platform could end technical support for the feature or remove it entirely.
Following Musk’s announcement, Twitter users criticised the decision and wondered about the status of their Circles tweets and if they would be made public in case the feature was removed.
Twitter’s other feature, Communities, was introduced in 2021, allowing users to connect with others on the platform with similar interests, but unlike Circles, their tweets are public. Users who are not part of the Community cannot engage with its tweets.
Twitter Circles had a security breach back in April, causing some users’ tweets to be visible outside of their Circle, which Twitter blamed on a bug, saying it was committed to protecting the privacy of the people who use its service.
We’re deprecating Circles in favor of improved Communities & DM group chat
