Two Guards Injured In Shooting At Congo Embassy In Cairo

Two Egyptian policemen were injured in a drive-by shooting at the Congolese embassy in Giza’s Mohandiseen district early on Wednesday, the interior ministry said, the latest in frequent assaults targeting security forces.

Gunmen on a motorbike opened fire at two members of the security forces standing guard at an embassy, a statement by the ministry said, without providing specifics.

Egypt state news agency MENA said the before-dawn assault targeted the embassy of the Democratic Republic of Congo, adding that the two assailants who carried out the attack were arrested.

Security forces have been increasingly targeted by bombings and shootings amid a burgeoning Islamist insurgency since the 2013 ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi.

The deadliest attacks against security forces have taken place in the northern part of the border Sinai region, a hotbed of Islamist militancy. Small-scale bombings, which target police as well as economic installations, have become a regular occurrence in Cairo and other mainland cities.
