UN Security Council calls for Houthis to stop attacks on shipping

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) members on Wednesday called on Yemen Houthi to stop their attacks on shipping in the key Red Sea trade route. This came during the council’s first formal meeting of 2024.

The members also described the attacks as an increasing threat to the global trade and the stability of the entire region, in addition to the intense fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza continues.

“These attacks pose grave implications for maritime security, international shipping and commerce, and they undermine the fragile humanitarian situation in Yemen,” threatening aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip, said a U.S. representative to the United Nations.

It is worth mentioning that the council released a statement last month addressing the Houthi threat condemning the attacks “in the strongest terms”. They also called for the immediate release of the Japanese registered MV Galaxy Leader which was seised by rebels on 19 November.
