Yemen Marks 50th Anniversary Of Republic

Members of Yemen’s armed forces cadets took part in a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the republic on Wednesday (September 26) in the capital, Sanaa.

The ceremony celebrated the revolution that toppled the regime of the Hameed al-Deen family in northern Yemen on September 26, 1962.

“Our celebration of this occasion comes amid the successes our country has achieved in overcoming the would-be disaster of overwhelming chaos and civil war,” said Yemen’s Prime Minister Muhammad Salim Basindwa.

The military chief of staff Major General Ahmad al-Ashwal – in his speech to military cadets at the ceremony – addressed the nation’s ongoing battle against extremism.

“The army has provided great sacrifices confronting the elements of terrorism and sabotage and all the evil forces that are desperately trying to stop the wheel of change from moving forward,” he said.

Yemen’s new government and Washington have made tackling militants their top priority in seeking to restore order in the Arabian Peninsula state, salvage an economy that has not been able to prevent starvation in some remote regions, and usher disparate political and communal groups into a dialogue.
