Uber lays off hundreds in Egypt on coronavirus hit, staff tells Reuters
Uber Technologies Inc has on Wednesday laid off hundreds of office-based staff in Egypt as the firm made wider cuts amid the fallout from the new coronavirus, one current and two former employees told Reuters.
The former employees, who both lost their jobs on Wednesday, and one employee who retained her post, said they had been told that about 40 percent of staff in Uber Egypt offices had been laid off.
The reports came after Uber announced earlier the day that it would cut about 3,700 full-time jobs worldwide, affecting 17 percent of its employee count.
An Uber spokesman declined to share details of the layoffs in Egypt but told Reuters that a total of 46 countries had been affected by the changes.
