Egypt announces end to Kenya’s tariff crisis

he Egyptian Minister of Trade and Industry, Nevine Gamea, announced an end to a crisis that affected exports to Kenya where the authorities imposed customs on Egyptian exports in violation of the COMESA agreement.

The Egyptian Commercial Service Office (ECS) addressed the East African Federation to extend the tariff exemption for the COMESA countries to the end of June 2021, according to a statement on Monday.

The ECS also asked the Kenyan government to comply with the COMESA agreement under which all Egyptian goods exported to member states enjoy exemption from all customs duties.

In 2019, the Egyptian exports to the Kenyan market reached $416 million. Top Egyptian exports include paper, iron and steel, plastics, soap, electric appliances, and cement.
