Global Exports of Citrus Drop 3%…Production down 7%

Dr. Hisham Allam, Director, Horticulture Research Institute (HRI), has unveiled that the global exports of citrus went down by 3% to reach 3.9 million tons, and the countries that export oranges are the European Union, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

The report, which issued in July 2012 by the US Ministry of Agriculture about citrus, the global markets and trade, elaborated that the global production of orange declined by 7% to 51.1 million tons. This decline is due to decreasing the production in Brazil, Mexico and EU countries.

He added that the Egyptian exports of citrus amounted to 1.1 million tons in 2011-2012; referring that the advantage of the Egyptian citrus represents in high quality of the fruits, in addition to Egypt’s location and it is near to the global market. He expected the increase the exports in 2013.
