Chile’s DGAC, Thales launch world’s 1st solar-powered air traffic station

Chile’s Dirección General de Aeronáutica Civil (DGAC) and Thales have launched the world’s first solar-powered air traffic control radar station in Northern Chile, according to a statement published by Thales on Wednesday.

This innovative system, powered entirely by solar energy, enhances air traffic surveillance and promotes sustainability in the aviation industry.

The radar station, equipped with advanced STAR NG primary and RSM secondary radars, ensures the safety of commercial and military flights in the region.

Located in the Atacama Desert at over 3500 metres, the station operates on 100 per cent solar energy, generating up to 960 kWh per day from 340 solar panels covering 10,000 m2.
