Europe needs flexible EV transition schedule – Renault CEO

Renault CEO Luca De Meo has voiced concerns over Europe’s timeline for transitioning to electric vehicles (EV), emphasising the need to reduce costs to meet EV goals.

In an interview with business daily Les Echos, De Meo stressed the importance of flexibility in the EU’s plan to ban diesel and gasoline car sales by 2035, a policy set for review in 2026.

Despite weak EV demand and recent calls to scrap the ban, De Meo, who also chairs the European car lobby group ACEA, warned against abandoning the objective entirely due to current market conditions.

De Meo admitted that Renault is not yet on track to achieve 100 per cent electric car production by 2035.

“If customers don’t follow us, we’re all responsible. We need to cut costs,” he stated, highlighting the challenge of aligning consumer demand with the company’s EV ambitions.
