Detention Of Egypt’s Mubarak On Graft Charges Renewed

Egypt’s Illicit Gains Authority (IGA) has ordered the detention of former president Hosni Mubarak for a further 15 days over graft charges.

On Wednesday, an IGA committee resumed its questioning of Mubarak at Tora Prison where he has been held since mid-April following a spell in Maadi Military Hospital, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

On 24 April, the IGA ordered the detention of Mubarak for an additional 15-day period pending further investigations into graft charges. Mubarak unsuccessfully appealed against the decision.

The 84-year-old former leader was “released” in April over the killing of protesters during the revolution that toppled him. His lawyer successfully argued that he had spent the maximum time in prison under temporary detention on those charges.

He remains in custody on separate corruption charges.

Last June, Mubarak received a life sentence for failing to protect peaceful protesters during the January 25 Revolution, but he will face a retrial beginning on 11 May due to procedural failings in the initial trial.

Mubarak’s former interior minister, Habib El-Adly, and six of his top aides also face retrial for their role in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising.
