Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar met on Wednesday with Anna Kasprzak, regional vice president of Medtronic and President of Africa, Central, and Eastern Europe, to discuss expanding cooperation in medical technology and healthcare solutions, according to a Cabinet statement.
The discussions focused on enhancing Egypt’s healthcare system through advanced medical procedures, including the wider adoption of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) and increasing the number of specialised centres offering this life-saving technique. Plans were also explored to integrate TAVI into the national healthcare framework to improve patient outcomes and reduce surgical waiting lists.
A key agenda item was the launch of a national screening programme for Critical Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD) in newborns, using pulse oximetry. The initiative aims to incorporate early detection protocols into Egypt’s national health strategy, ensuring timely intervention for affected infants.
The meeting also covered introducing Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) technology for treating neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, with discussions on its inclusion in Egypt’s health insurance system. Additionally, both parties explored the integration of bariatric surgery into the universal health insurance programme.
Further collaboration was discussed on providing medical equipment for Palestinian patients receiving treatment in Egypt and expanding specialised training programmes for Egyptian doctors, particularly in the field of cardiology.
