Egypt’s FM inspects Julius Nyerere Dam project in Tanzania

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aty inspected the Julius Nyerere Dam project in Tanzania on Thursday, which is being executed by an Egyptian joint venture between Egypt’s Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric. The project aims to meet Tanzania’s electricity needs, in line with presidential directives to prioritise its completion.

Egypt has previously affirmed its support for development in Nile Basin countries, ensuring that such projects do not harm downstream nations. The country has assisted Uganda in constructing several dams, including its participation in building Owen Falls Dam on Lake Victoria, conducting studies for Kira Dam, and contributing to the Bujagali Dam, located approximately nine kilometres from Owen Falls, to generate electricity. These efforts reflect Egypt’s broader role in supporting African nations, according to official Egyptian statements.
