Egypt has welcomed the European Commission’s announcement on Monday of a multi-annual €1.6 billion financial package to support Palestinian recovery, describing it as a clear expression of the EU’s backing for the Palestinian Authority and its institutions.
In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the funding will help meet the legitimate needs of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank, and supports their aspirations during a critical phase of their national struggle.
Egypt praised the EU’s understanding of the importance of aiding Palestinians and promoting a just and lasting settlement based on the two-state solution.
Cairo also welcomed the allocation of €82 million to support Palestinian refugees through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), stressing that the agency’s essential role in providing basic services and humanitarian assistance is irreplaceable.
Egypt expressed hope that the EU will continue supporting the Palestinian Authority and participate actively and constructively in the upcoming early recovery and reconstruction conference for Gaza, which Egypt will host in cooperation with the United Nations and the Palestinian government.
