Sustainable aviation fuel to increase – IATA

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) expects sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production to double in 2025, reaching 2 million tons, or 0.7 per cent of total airline fuel consumption.

However, IATA warned that the growth remains slow and costly, with SAF adding an estimated $4.4 billion to the global aviation fuel bill.

IATA Director General Willie Walsh called for faster production and cost reductions to meet industry sustainability targets. Airlines agreed in 2021 to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, relying heavily on SAF made from waste oil and biomass.

Tensions persist between airlines and energy firms over limited SAF supplies, while delays in more fuel-efficient aircraft deliveries from Airbus and Boeing add to the sector’s challenges.
