Egypt, China agree to deepen cooperation in strategic industries

Egypt and China have agreed to enhance cooperation in critical sectors—including electric vehicles, electronics, water desalination, solar energy, and artificial intelligence—as part of efforts to advance their comprehensive strategic partnership.

The agreement came during talks between Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan El-Khatib and China’s Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao held in Beijing during El-Khatib’s official visit.

The two sides also committed to coordinating the organisation of an investment promotion forum in Egypt and expanding joint work in developing supply chains and other key industries.

Both ministers reaffirmed their countries’ close ties, which were elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership over a decade ago. El-Khatib described the upcoming visit of China’s Premier to Egypt as an opportunity to translate past agreements into concrete investments.

He also highlighted Egypt’s competitive advantages, including its strategic location and multiple trade agreements, positioning it as a regional production and export hub. El-Khatib urged Chinese companies to take advantage of these benefits by establishing production centres in Egypt.

China’s Minister Wang Wentao praised the $17 billion trade volume between the two countries and noted China’s position as Egypt’s largest trading partner. He also welcomed Egypt’s support for Chinese investments in major projects such as the TEDA zone, the Iconic Tower, and renewable energy initiatives.

The two countries plan to continue strengthening economic collaboration through the Egypt-China Joint Committee, with Egypt proposing to host the next session later this year.
